A holandesa Pestilence é geralmente tida como uma das líderes da cena death metal do final dos anos 80/início dos anos 90, seguindo de perto o Death como inovadores do gênero. Combinando elementos do Slayer, Celtic Frost, Venom e Possessed, o Pestilence foi um grupo subestimado e de vida curta que, junto com companheiros como Sepultura, Atheist e Morbid Angel, ajudou a expandir e redefinir o significado do death metal.
